The 20th Nordic Symposium in Tourism and Hospitality Research

Welcome to Rovaniemi to the 20th Nordic Symposium in Tourism and Hospitality Research!

We welcome you to participate in the 20th anniversary conference of Nordic tourism and hospitality research. The topic of the 2011 symposium, “Well-being in Tourism and Recreation”, directs the focus towards the fundamental questions of the tourism phenomenon: How modern tourism can enhance the well-being of tourist, tourism employees, local residents and destination areas as a whole? The basic assumption is that people travel in order to enjoy new environments and cultures as well as to promote their mental and physical health and that that countries and municipalities use tourism as a tool for economic growth and prosperity.

During the conference, three keynote speakers will give presentations in relation to the main theme and parallel sessions will be run on themes with special focus on well-being broadly taken. The aim of the conference is to stimulate a dialogue among scholars from various disciplines and countries in order to challenge and move beyond the theoretical and methodological frontiers of tourism research. Moreover, we invite practitioners and decision makers to participate the symposium to discuss best practices, future research needs and implementation of the current research knowledge. We also welcome participants outside the Nordic countries. The conference language is English.

Conference is organized by the Lapland Institute for Tourism Research and Education, The Finnish Forest Research Institute Metla and Metsähallitus Natural Heritage Services. The conference venue will be the University of Lapland in Rovaniemi, which is the capital of Finnish Lapland with approximately 60 000 inhabitants. The city is a combination of urban services and beautiful natural environment, and it is located at the Arctic Circle, at the point where the rivers of Kemijoki and Ounasjoki meet. Rovaniemi is also the second most important travel destination for foreign tourists in Finland.
